The vineyards of Bordeaux yield many of the world’s classics. Its whites (try the great value dry Sauvignon Blanc and Mouton Cadet) and famous Sauternes complement wonderfully balanced reds. Merlot-dominated St Emilion and Pomerol, which is made largely on limestone, contrast with the Cabernet strong Medoc district which is based on gravel. Enjoy both commune wines (like St Estephe) and single vineyard examples. One tip – look for the ‘second’ wine from great estates!
