With over 250 million bottles of Champagne produced annually, there is a good choice
whether looking for the elegance of Chardonnay (‘blanc de blancs’) or the ‘meaty’
style derived from black grapes (mainly Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier), often with
a touch of oak. Legally Champagne may only be made in the delimited area of northern
France but Nyetimber is a close rival, produced in Sussex, initially by two Americans,
Stuart and Sandy Moss. Let’s not forget Marie Antoinette who said, “Champagne is
the only wine that leaves a woman beautiful after drinking it.”
